Community
The Community Committee supports and organises events for the benefit of the local community of Ware and the surrounding area. The committee often works along side neighbouring Rotary Clubs to support local charities and fund raising activities.
Recent and forthcoming events include:-
Stroke Awareness (26th April 2008)
A temporary “clinic” was set up in premises on Ware High Street. This clinic was manned by medical staff (typically three nurses and a doctor). Rotarians persuaded 124 members of the public to have their blood pressure monitored free of charge in the clinic, thereby identifying those with a higher risk of a stroke. Of those tested, 22 were advised to consult with their doctors.
Lend-A-Hand Day (10th May 2008)
Rotarians help aged or handicapped individuals with household jobs such as tidying gardens, cleaning patios, sorting sheds and garages, hanging curtains etc. The Community Committee has responsibility for arranging and directing the manpower required to cover each of the projects identified. This year 30 jobs were undertaken by 44 volunteers, and £85 of donations were received from satisfied clients. The Mercury newspaper covered the event, and included photographs of Rotarians at work in the subsequent newspaper article.
Ware Carnival (5th July 2008)
The Hertford Shires Club entered a “Rock Around The Clock” float in the carnival parade. The float comprised a large clock decorated with flowers made from plastic bags. Club members dressed in 1960’s costumes pulled the float, whilst others members danced to the tune of Bill Haley’s hit Rock Around the Clock. Monies were collected for local charities, and leaflets distributed advertising Hertford Shires Club. A fun day was had by all.
Ware Firework Display (2nd November 2008)
This is one of the club’s major fund raising activities. The Community Committee helps generate sponsorship from local businesses, and co-ordinates the running of the event. Planning and organisation of this years event is currently in progress.
Usbourne Dictionary
The Community Committee is investigating the possibility of providing Usbourne dictionaries (illustrated dictionaries
for young children) to selected local primary schools. The dictionaries would be distributed to children in the schools'
reception classes (age range 4 - 5).
The Community Committee meets at members’ homes on a monthly basis, when we enjoy a sociable evening whilst progressing
support for our events.
